What yoga really is and the glamorization of asana with Indu Arora

Hi Reader,

For the past 6 months since having my boy asana has been a very minimal (practically non-existent) part of my life and routine. It's only been in the past few weeks now that he's sitting up on his own and a bit happier to play by himself with his newfound independence that I've been able to get back on my mat for Mums and Bubs classes once a week.

While I missed being able to connect with my body in this way, this time also opened up space for me to explore the other limbs and more subtle parts of my practice. If asana was how you were introduced to yoga, like myself, it is likely there was a time you thought asana was the core of yoga. I definitely did, I didn't really realize there was much more to it until I took my first YTT. I remember a moment while I was studying the eight limbs that I said to myself “Ohhhh so this is why it has been so impactful.”

Practising asana with splashes of pranayama and meditation has saved me and transformed my world in so many ways I won't go into here because you'll be reading all day. And even with this, I know that I've only just scratched the surface of the knowledge and depth that is yoga.

Which is why in today's episode of All Mats Taken I'm excited to share with you this incredible interview with Indu Arora.

If you're not familiar with Indu's work yet, you're in for a treat. As an Ayurveda and Yoga Teacher, mentor and author who considers herself a student for life, she is such a wealth of knowledge. Her core philosophy is, ‘Yoga is work-in, not work-out!” For me, Indu's words are like listening to a poem.

In this episode we'll discuss the issues with the glamorization of asanas, what yoga teachers and students should be exploring instead, we'll discuss the importance of subtlety in yoga, the real meaning of Yoga and devoting yourself to being a lifelong student.

If you're not familiar with Indu's work yet, you're in for a treat. For me, Indu's words are like listening to a poem. They're always carefully thought through and I can listen to the same conversation on repeat and pick out something new to digest each time.

In this illuminating episode, we explore:

  • The real meaning of yoga beyond asana
  • Why subtlety matters
  • The beauty of being a lifelong student
  • What teachers & practitioners should really focus on

This is an episode for everyone in our community to listen to (Yoga teachers and students) so please share this around with your friends.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on the glamorization of asana and how we as a community can shift students' expectations of what they get in a YTT and what it really teaches you. Please reply to this email, or head to the Facebook Group and let's spark a community discussion :)

All the best,

Hi! I'm a Showit Website Designer & Host of The All Mats Taken Podcast for Yoga Teachers

I’m Adrianne, a web designer in NZ with way too many yoga mats, loads of strategy and a whole lot of heart. I began Jerrett Digital Website Design & The All Mats Taken Podcast because I saw so many yoga teachers and wellness brands leaving money on the table. Their brands and websites looked good, but had no strategy, no intuitive user experience, and no obvious pathway to conversion. In my newsletter, podcast and through online events I help teach yoga teachers and wellness professionals grow their online presence and build their businesses with strategy and heart their way.

Hi Reader, I’ll be honest (and you may have already heard me say this) but Instagram…scratch that…social media is not my favorite place to be. It’s just not how I spend my time naturally. I'm aging myself somewhat saying this but I didn't grow up with it. Facebook only came to be a thing for us in my late teens and I didn't have a smart phone till my mid-twenties (I was a late adopter however). I just never really got the hang of it personally so it's a challenge to force myself...

Hi Reader, Business and marketing has been an ongoing fascination for me. It doesn't come naturally like some other things. This is one reason I started this community. I'm not a business coach, expert, or guru. I'm a brand/website designer and newbie yoga teacher/educator. I've got questions and like you, I’m seeking the answers. This week I came across a local retreat seeking yoga teachers and other holistic wellness professionals. It sounds like a great opportunity but I've never taught...

Hi Reader, I created a tripping hazard in my room which I kept toppling over, reminding me to clean up my mess. But my time-constrained to-do list was pressuring me... Then saucha came to the forefront of my mind and I got to pondering, how could I infuse this concept into my daily life and business to help me grow and live in a state of more ease. That's what today's quick 10-minute episode is all about. It's an invitation to embody saucha in your business. 🎙️ Listen on Apple 🎙️ Listen on...
